We are excited for the first ever Geothermal Rising Colorado RIG geothermal field trip through Colorado's Front Range, as we unravel the geological features that set up potential geothermal resources deep in the Denver Basin.

This field trip delves into the heart of the earth's thermal energy, focusing on the Lyons Formation and Pre-Cambrian basement outcrops along the Front Range for their geothermal energy potential. The primary objective of this field trip is to explore the geologic nature associated with geothermal potential nestled within the Denver Basin and the Colorado Mineral Belt and to discuss the geothermal exploration potential of these two formations.
Our investigation into the Lyons Formation provides insights into its depositional history, lithology, mineralogy, and thermal conductivity, which are crucial factors in assessing its suitability for geothermal energy extraction. Additionally, we will discuss a core-based study in hydrothermal alterations within the Lyons Formation beneath Wattenberg Field, offering valuable clues to the geothermal reservoirs that lie deep in the basin. Venturing into the realm of the Pre-Cambrian basement, participants will visit ancient outcrops rich with hydrothermal alteration and structural influences. Through detailed observations and analysis, we aim to decipher the complex interplay of geological forces that have shaped these formations over millennia. Understanding these structural nuances is pivotal for understanding geothermal resources in Colorado. Additionally, these formations are associated with ongoing geothermal exploration projects deep within the Denver Basin.
The field trip will be guided by Dr. Steve Sonnenberg of Colorado School of Mines and Dr. Lew Kleinhans, Exploration Geologist. The field trip will start in Golden on the Colorado School of Mines campus on Saturday July 27th and end in Idaho Springs at Beau Jo's Pizza for lunch, with pizza and beer provided by the GR CO RIG! Field trip details will be sent out to registrants before the event, along with a field guide to each of our stop locations.
On Friday, August 9th (5:30-8:30 pm) the CO GR RIG is organizing an in-person/hybrid event at Carver Brewing Company in Durango, Colorado, please join us!
At this meeting, our guest speaker will be Dr. Holly Brunkal, Lecturer in Engineering and Geology at Western Colorado University, on "Creating a Nexus for Geothermal in SW CO". Dr. Brunkal is a senior lecturer with 11 years of teaching experience and is previously the Director of the Western – CU Boulder Partnership Program. She is actively involved with a proposed ‘energy learning center’ at the University to offer training and workshops on community geothermal utilization opportunities and workforce training in SW CO.

Jason is a senior clean energy policy and strategic communications professional with over 14 years of experience advancing renewable energy policies and deployment at the federal, state and local levels.

Save the Date for the Geothermal Exhibit Celebration and Industry Mixer
Date: April 18, 2024 Time: 5-7pm PDT
We will start with a presentation at 5:30pm PDT, followed by networking and appetizers.
Join Geothermal Rising (GR), the Colorado Energy Office (CEO), and the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) to foster networking across the heating and cooling segment of the geothermal industry. This workshop will provide generalized feedback on the status of the industry in Colorado -- challenges, barriers, opportunities, resources. We are also excited to have Governor Jared Polis provide welcome remarks to attendees.
The workshop will explore:
Part of this workshop will inform the first annual CEO Geothermal Sector Survey themes, questions, and process. There will also be a tour of the Denver Pipefitters Local #208 facility and apprenticeship programs.
As a workshop attendee you will gain valuable intel on the status of the industry and its trends, help the CEO firm up geothermal stakeholders for ongoing communications, better understand the CEO and industry opportunities to support engagement, facilitate and promote the workforce transition into the geothermal industry, and help the CEO improve the Geothermal Sector Survey for the State of Colorado.
This is a hybrid event, virtual participation and feedback is welcome.
