Geothermal Capitol Hill Day is where policy meets possibility.

Each year, geothermal experts, engineers, students, and business leaders head to Washington, D.C., to show Congress how geothermal energy can help meet the nation’s energy needs. This two-day event gives participants the chance to advocate directly with lawmakers and their staff and get a firsthand look at how federal policy is made.

What We Covered in 2026

In 2026, more than 60 participants from 39 organizations representing 15 sectors met with 127 congressional offices. From startups to established developers, the delegation brought perspectives from across the U.S. geothermal industry and focused on five federal policy priorities.

  • Permitting and leasing. Modernize federal permitting and make geothermal leasing more predictable.

  • Federal funding. Sustain investment in geothermal research, resource mapping, and field demonstrations.

  • Transmission and interconnection. Improve grid planning and reduce delays in connecting geothermal projects to the grid.

  • Tax incentives. Protect federal clean electricity tax credits and clarify how they apply to geothermal projects.

  • Early-stage project risk. Expand tools that help manage the upfront risks of exploration, drilling, and demonstrating new technologies.

What We Accomplished

The delegation also met with six federal agencies, bringing practical examples of how federal policy affects projects from exploration through deployment. A milestone in the broader 2026 advocacy effort was the formation of the bipartisan Congressional Geothermal Caucus, which gives members of Congress a forum to learn about geothermal energy and work together on policies that support its development.

Join us in Washington, D.C., April 13–14, 2027, to build on that work and help shape the federal policies that can bring more reliable, affordable geothermal energy to communities across the country.
