7:30 AM – 9:30 AM | Session 5A: Panel - What About Water? A Discussion on Next-Generation Geothermal Systems and Water, Including Technology Innovations, State-by-State Regulations, and Stakeholder Perceptions

As electricity demand rapidly grows to meet needs of large loads, an “estimated additional 100GW of new peak capacity is needed by 2030,” (Shehabit, et al., 2025). To meet this growing need, geothermal has the potential to serve as a reliable and local resource. Previous National Laboratory of the Rockies studies estimate average enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) resource potential ranging from 27 to 57 terawatt-electric within 1 to 7 kilometers depth across the United States (Akindipe, et al., 2025). With this potential in mind, questions surrounding known water availability and estimated use are still unknown. This panel convenes a diverse set of experts to discuss the following topical areas: Data, methods, and modeling available to estimate expected water volumes and supply limitations. State regulations and Western water rights. Historical water uses for energy. Potential impacts to stakeholders and perceptions related to EGS.
